himyf (ep. 2)

the year 2035

kids, as i was saying, this is the story of how i met...
joseph-gordon levitt.

who is he?!? you know who he is. he's that actor from "inception" and "(500) days of summer," those classic movies of mine that you like to watch on the vintage dvd player.

well, your aunties and i are fans. that is why when we heard that his online arts collaborative was having a show in the city, there wasn't much debate about if we would attend. a few weeks before the show, i bought the tickets from a curt box office attendant who thought the show was general admission. it worked out well though because our random assigned seats were not bad at all: a third of the way back from the stage and one seat away from the center aisle.

we were giddy with anticipation waiting for the show to begin. the opening titles finally roll on the screen. as they end, he rushes out on to the stage with his squinty-eyed smile, a video camera in hand, and an enthusiastic, "ladies and gentleman, are we recording?"
are we recording?

the fear that the celebrity wouldn't live up to our idea of him completely dissipates in those first few seconds. the three of us are taken aback by the fact that we are actually in the same room as him and (as your auntie frances put it) that he is "as cute and charming in person as he is on screen."

after playing a few short films, he introduces the next segment of the show: the tiny stories collaboration. it's exactly as it sounds. writers contribute 1-2 line stories and artists make illustrations to accompany them. in some cases, they turn these tiny stories into tiny films with animated art, music and sound effects.

he jumps off the stage to choose people from the crowd to provide the voiceover for a couple stories. instead of picking people who are screaming for his attention, he tells us that he will be taking "recommendations" from other audience members on who should get a chance to read. at first we are excitedly pointing at each other but as he approaches our row, we completely freeze.

in our star-stricken state, he selects two people and returns to the stage. considering our mediocre seats, we cannot believe that he even came that close to us.

the first girl who reads is good. she's kinda irritating but adds personality to the story. he is slightly disappointed with the gentleman who reads the second story. in search of a new reader, he jumps off the stage again and walks down the center aisle scanning the crowd. determined not to miss a second photo opp of him 5 ft away from us, i whip out my camera to the ready-position.

focused on getting the shot as he approaches again, i don't realize that bev and frances continue to point at me to be chosen. he gets to our row and looks directly at me and says, "you with the camera!"

before i know it, i am on stage with him reading a story in front of 700+ strangers.

and that, kids, is how i met joseph-gordon levitt.

obviously, he is not your father. at the time, though, there were a lot of people that wished that he would be the father of their children (myself included). also at the time, i still didn't know that your father would be your father. that he would be the one to really make my dreams come true.

making room

ain't no shame in holdin' on to grief.
as long as you make room for other things too.
~bubbles (season 5, ep. 9, the wire)

age & travel

a writer friend of mine wrote that "the older he gets, the more he travels, the less he knows." i understand what he meant now.

it seems the more places i see and experience, the bigger i realize the world to be. the more that i become aware of, the more i realize how relatively little i know of it. how many places i still have to go, how much more of it there is still to learn.

maybe that's enlightenment enough. to know that there is no final resting place of the mind. no moment of smug clarity. perhaps wisdom, such that it is, for me, means realizing how small i am, and unwise, and how far i have yet to go.
~anthony bourdain (at the end of his peru episode in season 1)

the year 2035

kids, i'm gonna tell you an incredible story.

25 years ago, (before i was mom) i had this whole other life.
it was waaaay back in 2010, i was half the age i am now...on my way to becoming a city planner and living in oakland with your auntie frances, auntie bev and mochi, auntie bev's dog.

roomies ;D

mochi

it was great. we were young college grads, traveling as often as our vacation accruements & disposable incomes would allow, and only really certain of our favorite bar in the city.

don't get me wrong though. our early twenties weren't all handshakes and happy hours. we had just capped off one hell of a decade. i know people my age say we grew up in the 90's, but it was really the 00's when we became adults: maneuvering our way through high school and then college, acknowledging the rough realities of society and the world; and eventually stumbling into careers (or grad schools) to stake our niche to meet these challenges.

by the time 2009 rolled around, we thought we were primed for a new beginning. it was the year barack obama became the 44th president. your uncle vaughn, auntie melissa and i even went to washington dc to see that historic inauguration. but i will get to that part of the story in a little bit...

as i was saying, 2009 started off with a lot of hope. unfortunately as the year progressed, it seemed like there was always another tragedy, another death, another disaster. and to add, the decade ended with the state budget still in the dumps, "the great recession" continuing to afflict our national economy, and a handful of friends and relatives unemployed.

seems like a grim context to start a tale, but kids, this is the story of how i met...

nostalgia part 2

"...in greek, “nostalgia” literally means “the pain from an old wound”.
it’s a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone.
this device isn’t a spaceship, it’s a time machine.
it goes backwards, forwards, takes us to a place where we ache to go again.
it’s not called the wheel. It’s called the carousel.
it lets us travel the way a child travels.
round and around, and back home again.
to a place where we know we are loved"

living and dealing with hypocrisies

EVERYBODY has them.
some hypocrisies are too deeply ingrained in my life and personal history to even do anything about. i mean, how do i justify...
...practicing a religion that was imposed on my native people by colonizers?
OR
...a berkeley education paid for my father's pharmaceutical sales income?

i'm fully aware of these hypocrisies (or maybe they're more ironies?), but i have decided to leave those be.

then there are those that i know i can choose to make different. what is integrity and credibility anyway? in my mind i know it includes deed following word, and vice versa. which is one of the main reasons i'm planning on making the move back to the east bay. i work for an org that hopes to decrease the effects of climate change by creating better transportation and land use options. all the while, here i am driving my mini-suv to bart and commuting 2 hours a day! some people (esp. my family) don't understand my logic on this. bottom line: i'm living with these inconsistencies and will adjust for them as necessary.

-------------------------------------
came in late with watching "the wire," but enjoying it so much now. i love the bits of street philosophy especially when it speaks to what i've been thinking. just watched episode 6 from season 2 where d'angelo in a prison book club discusses the great gatsby:
He's saying that the past is always with us: where we come from, what we go through, how we go through. all that shit matters. It's like you can change up, you can say you somebody, you can give yourself a whole new story. But what came first is who you really are. And what happen before is what really happened. And it don't matter that some fool say he different...cuz the only thing that make you different is what you really do, or what you really go through...Gatsby, he was who he was and he did what he did. And cuz he wasn't ready to get real with the story, that shit caught up to him.
-------------------------------------
in other camille hypocrisies...WHAT THE EFF was i thinking on saturday? had a fitness afternoon running around gg park and playing soccer & ultimate with the co-workers. then ruined it all with an evening of over-partying that ended badly (to say the least). sore muscles and hungover is never a good combo. that ish caught up with me, and i paid for it.

two-minute date

yes brit was on "himym" last week, but this was the highlight of that episode
